Welcome to Burrokeet
What is Burrokeet?
Burrokeet is an implementation of a software tool to facilitate the creation of Learning Content Packages for use within Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS). What makes Burrokeet unique is that it removes the need for content authors to have an understanding of the LCMS in use, they can utilise whatever content authoring tools they prefer and use Burrokeet to structure and generate a Learning Content Package for delivery in either the embedded LCMS or any standards compliant system.
Features
Although still at an early stage of development Burrokeet is useful already. In fact, this site is developed and published using the Burrokeet tool. Everything you see here is created from a single set of XML source documents. Here are some highlights:
- XHTML web pages (you're looking at one)
- PDF generation of pages (here is this page as a PDF)
- Presentation slides (recent St. Lucia presentation, same content as a XHTML or PDF)
- Content Package editing environment with integrated online WYSIWYG Content editor (see some screenshots, and a demo movie)
- Support for Open Office documents - various pages on this site are generated from either Open Office Word or Open Office Impress files - we challenge you to identify which.
- Support for Simplified Docbook (again, try and spot which of these pages come from docbook sources)
- Self-Hosting publishing environment. This site is published as a static website, however, the same application can run as a web application, allowing interactivity features such as student testing
- Repository of Content Objects which can be semmlessly integrated into other objects. This site is actualy made up of two distinct content objects, one for Burrokeet, one for general Open Source project management materials which are reused in other Open Source projects.
- Integration of content from Wiki documents (no online demo available yet)
- Embedding of syndicated content (see Project News and Project Info which are syndicated from feeds on our Sourceforge project).
- Exporting as an IMS standard Learning Object (This web site in WebCT - username test, password Burrokeet)
- Several Example Content Packages are available
There are many other features that are available or planned, take a look at roadmap for current status of planned functionality and our Request For Enhancement (RFE) tracker for some posible functionality.
